The 40th Anniversary of Earth Day on April 22nd will be observed by celebrations and community service involving millions of people all over the world. The first Earth Day on April 22, 1970 was inspired by a disastrous oil spill off the Santa Barbara, CA coast. After witnessing the environmental devastation firsthand, then-U.S. Senator Gaylord Nelson (Wisconsin), proposed the first nationwide environmental protest. Attended by 20 million people, the coast-to-coast rallies increased environmental awareness and made “ecology” a household word.

In the years that followed, a number of landmark environmental laws were passed by the U.S. Congress, including the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts, as well as the creation of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Forty years later, our planet is still facing vital issues such as climate change and overuse of toxic chemicals. Not only is it important for our governments to focus on energy efficiency, renewable energy and green jobs, but also for each of us to do our part individually by making everyday choices that support sustainability—such as using organic products, taking public transportation and recycling. SJ Creations supports a range of charities dear to our hearts on an ongoing basis.

First and foremost, you may already know about our special Pure Organics Pink Grapefruit products, which were developed to support the fight against breast cancer with a portion of the proceeds going to related charities each year. SJ Creations founder Rich Yousko has a personal connection with this disease, having watched his mother fight and survive it twice. In addition, SJ Creations supports Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Diego County, where Rich has been an active member of the Board of Directors for four years. He also serves on the University of San Diego’s Alumni Association Board in support of the school’s Scholarship Program.

Two international charities have benefited from SJ Creations’ generosity, as well. Owners Rich and Sundi Yousko have contributed to a non-profit called Serving Hands International that runs orphanages in Mexico—for which they supplied backpacks and monetary donations—and Swaziland, through the Heart for Africa program—giving financial donations.

And after the devastating 8.0 Sichuan, China earthquake in May 2008, the Youskos donated 17,000 bottles of their company’s Antibacterial Hand Gel sanitizers through International Relief Teams. Over 70,000 people were killed in that quake, which left anywhere from five to 11 million people homeless. On a persona note, SJ Creations’ Chinese factory is nearby, and Ming, one of its workers, has a home in Sichuan.

For SJ Creations, Earth Day 2010 is the perfect reminder for all of us to keep giving back, whether it’s by donating, volunteering or going organic—all year round!
