On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake disrupted the lives of millions of Haitians. While the physical aftershocks have long since subsided, the people of Haiti are still recovering from this devastating event. Almost a year and a half later, thousands of people are still homeless.

International Relief Teams, “a non-profit, international relief organization dedicated to…(assisting) the victims of disaster and profound poverty worldwide,” provided short-term emergency relief immediately following the earthquake. Now, the IRT hopes to help the residents of a Haitian village start their lives over by offering permanent housing.

For only $2,500, a 192 -square-foot home is pre-manufactured by Harbor Homes LLC in the United States and sent to Haiti for completion. IRT shipped their first set of 50 homes this month and hopes to reach their goal of providing 150 houses.

According to the IRT, “These PermaShelters are designed with structural components that make them impervious to rot and termite damage, and are highly resistant to hurricane force winds and seismic activity.”

The founders of SJ Creations have been active with the IRT for more than 20 years and we fully support their relief efforts. We hope you do as well.

With winter still in full swing in some areas of the country dry skin seems to be affecting everyone! Here are a few tips to help keep your skin moisturized during this chilly season:

• Instead of using hot water to wash your hands or take showers use lukewarm water, I know it’s going to be tough especially with how cold it is, but hot water tends to dry your skin out.  This is one rule that I have a hard time abiding too, because I absolutely love the hot water when it’s cold outside, but it really does dry out my skin and I find myself having to use way too much lotion to compensate for it.
• Use moisturizer when your skin is slightly damp and don’t be afraid to use it often, when you’re done washing your hands, when you’re out of the shower, etc.  In the cold weather it is always good to keep your moisturizer handy!
• Try to exfoliate once a week in order to remove dead skin cells and keep your skin looking healthy.
• During the day, before you go outside put on your moisturizer then put on your gloves and at night put on moisturizer and then put on socks before heading to bed for the night.  When you wake up in the morning, your feet will feel moisturized.
• Don’t forget your lips! Your lips dry out the fastest, so make sure you keep a moisturizing lip balm with you  all day long.

I travel. A lot.  I  really dislike putting my big bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body wash into those tiny little travel containers, without a doubt, I manage to spill a good size portion of it all over myself.  This is when those little travel kits come in handy.  My problem is finding a travel kit that has product that smells good and is the right size.
