A lot of you may know that Sodium Lauryl Sulfates (SLS’s) are bad, but you may wonder why? Well, I’ve done some researching to shed some light –
Here is a nice article on Skinflint’s Blog: http://skinflints.blogspot.com/2009/09/skinny-on-sodium-lauryl-sulphate.html
“Recent research suggested that SLS is not as safe as manufacturers lead consumers to believe. Studies showed that due to its low molecular weight, it could be easily absorbed into the skin. Other studies suggested that it could build up in the heart, liver and brain and cause major problems in these organs. Also of concern was comments that SLS caused improper eye development in young children.”

“SLS is a highly effective surfactant used in any task requiring the removal of oily stains and residues. As such the compound is found in high concentrations in industrial products including engine degreasers, floor cleaners, and car wash soaps. In household products, SLS is used in lower concentrations with toothpastes, shampoos, and shaving foams. It is an important component in bubble bath formulations for its thickening effect and its ability to create a lather.”
And a page with some good information, lots of links: http://www.healthy-communications.com/slsmostdangerousirritant.html
“Because of the alarming penetrating power of SLS, large amounts of these known carcinogens are absorbed through the skin into the body. A variation of SLS is SODIUM LAURETH SULFATE (Sodium Lauryl Ether Sulfate- SLES). It exhibits many of the same characteristics and is a higher-foaming variation of SLS.”
Hope this helps!
